We’ve included licorice root (Glycyrrhiza glabra) in ZiiNGLES for its superb oral health benefits. It is both a demulcent which soothes and protects the oral mucosa, as well as a powerful natural antimicrobial that helps maintain oral health.
The licorice plant, a member of the Pea Family and originally from northern Africa, has been used for generations as a simple chew, a natural sweet, and a mouth freshener.
The sweetness of licorice root is due to its glycyrrhizin content. Glycyrrhizin has proven antiviral, antibacterial, anti-inflammatory, and hepatoprotective properties. Surprisingly, this very sweet molecule—glycyrrhizin is 30 to 50 times sweeter than sugar—is also known to help prevent dental caries!
Glycyrrhizic acid, which makes up from 4 to over 20% of the root, is not the only biologically active molecule in licorice. Recent research suggests that other bioactive constituents such as glabridin, licochalcone A, licoricidin, and licorisoflavan A possess potential benefit for oral health. The effect of licorice's bioactive ingredients on both the oral microbial pathogens as well as the host immune response involved in common dental diseases (dental caries, periodontitis, candidiasis, and recurrent aphthous ulcers) has been reported…

In traditional Chinese medicine, licorice is said to balance and harmonize the other ingredients in a formula.
Licorice protects the stomach lining and intestinal mucosa, making it useful with heartburn and acid reflux, ulcers, and other digestive disorders. Its soothing demulcent action is especially beneficial for coughs, sore throat, and dry mouth.
